We take a lot of pride in pushing the boundaries when it comes to drums and mental health. Fortunately for us, half our operation exists in Colorado, where psilocybin has been decriminalized. As a result, mental health practices across the state are booming with new modalities utilizing this compound to treat things like depression, anxiety, and much more. Let's talk a bit about what psilocybin is, how we incorporate it into our retreats, and what we're looking to accomplish.
To start, psilocybin is a natural compound found in mushrooms that the body converts into an active chemical called psilocin, which acts remarkably like serotonin - a key neurotransmitter in your brain responsible for mood and perception. When psilocybin enters your system, it temporarily rewires the brain's communication network: it quiets the rigid, organized "control center" (often called the Default Mode Network) that handles your daily routine and sense of self, while simultaneously building new bridges between parts of the brain that rarely talk to each other. This shift causes an altered state of reality, while also allowing the brain to break free from stuck, repetitive thought patterns.
We utilize psilocybin as an enhancement to the power of group drumming. In our microdose experience, users are drumming together for three days, the second of which features the psilocybin session. Everyone takes a small dose, lays down to enjoy a soundbath, and then we all drum together. It's the act of cohesive, egoless drumming with intentional listening that truly causes an ascendance -- the psilocybin simply helps users drop in a little deeper, listen a little more closely, and interact a little more consciously. In our macrodose experience, users drum all weekend but when it comes to the psilocybin session, they remain either laying down, or they get up and wiggle around a bit. In these sessions, users are receiving the power of rhythm: RhythmetriX provides a team of professional musicians to drum in ways designed to reach the soul and take users and a rhythmic journey unlike anything they've experienced. All sessions are closely monitored by licensed mental health professionals for safety.
Our goal is to facilitate a profound drumming experience that is deepened by the use of psilocybin. By utilizing mood-congruent memory, we build a strong neurological association between the breakthrough emotions of the retreat and the physical act of drumming. We want to ensure that the retreat isn't just a one-time event; instead, we aim to anchor that feeling so that in the future, simply picking up a drum -- 100% sober -- triggers that same sense of connection. The drum becomes a lasting tool to transport users back to that state of presence and peace whenever needed, in a faster, easier capacity.
So far, we've hosted over 6 retreats, varying in size from as small as 10 participants to as large as 30. The results have been overwhelmingly positive, with some users describing their experiences as, "life changing," and others describing their time as, "something I can never forget and hope to incorporate in my day-to-day for the rest of my life."
Ultimately, it's all about drums, music, rhythm, and the power of human connection.
We hope you'll join us on our next journey soon!
